Owner’s liability in the event of a water leak

Water leaks in any complex are the responsibility of the owner, Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said this in response to a question during a recent talanoa session with Fiji Ports Terminal Ltd staff members.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the responsibility of the Water Authority of Fiji was the maintenance of the pipes before the water meter.

“Normally you have the meter so the pipe from the water authority goes up to the meter and then there is a pipe from the meter to your property, that’s your responsibility,” he said .

“So if there is a leak in your compound or if there is a leak in your tap or your toilet, it is not the responsibility of the Water Authority of Fiji.

“The responsibility of the Water Authority of Fiji is the pipe before the meter.

“I mean, I had the same situation too, I had to pay because there was a leak somewhere, so I had to dig the whole complex to find the leak.

“So it’s your responsibility otherwise people won’t take care of the pipes, the water company will continue to pay.

“So you have to find the leak yourself.

“You know there are people who don’t fix their toilets, the water is constantly going through the cistern, obviously the Water Authority of Fiji can’t pay for that.”
