You may be able to collect more unemployment benefits

HOUSTON – If you have received unemployment benefits that have run out in the past few months, check your email. You may be eligible for more. You should receive an email telling you that you need to request another payment.

Congress approved the funding in December, but it took the Texas Labor Commission time to let people know he’s available.

“They’ll get a message that says, ‘You’re back in the system. You can start requesting payments again,” explained James Bernsen of TWC.

Some people are already benefiting from it. Those who qualify will receive whatever state assistance, plus an additional $300 from the federal government. Payments will last until March 14. The essential thing you need to do is request your payment every two weeks.

“When people stop asking for payments, they’re basically telling us ‘I don’t need payments. I have a job where I no longer need the payments,” Bernsen said.

When you get the message telling you to start asking for payments again, Bernsen said your benefits will be backdated to the last week of December.

What’s up this time

This time, you must submit additional documents to prove that you are unemployed (example: pay stubs, W2). If you were self-employed but applying for benefits, you will be asked to show proof such as a business license, tax return, or business receipts.

If you do not receive a message, Bernsen asks you not to call the Texas Workforce Commission. He says the phone lines are still jammed. If you have a simple request, you should use the chatbot on the TWC website to ask questions. You should get a response sooner.
